The Conwy Valley and North Wales Coast Community Rail Partnership recently organised a memorable day out for a group of young carers, taking them on a special train trip to the popular seaside town of Llandudno. The trip was designed not only as a fun excursion but also as an opportunity to teach the young carers important lessons about rail safety and to boost their confidence in using the rail network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the scenic train journey, the young carers were joined by Jehan Senaratne of British Transport Police<\/a>, who delivered an engaging and interactive rail safety talk. Jehan focused on the dangers of trespassing on the railway, highlighting how to stay safe around trains and at stations. The young carers were keen to learn and asked questions, helping to reinforce the importance of safety while travelling on the rail network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also on hand to support the group was Sian Jones, Community Rail Ambassador for Transport for Wales<\/a>, who encouraged the young carers to feel confident in using public transport. Sian offered the group practical tips on how to navigate stations, timetables, and train travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After arriving in Llandudno, the group enjoyed an afternoon on the town\u2019s iconic beach. The young carers had a traditional chippy lunch by the sea, followed by a creative session of rock painting, which brought smiles all around. The activities provided a much-needed break for the young carers, many of whom balance their caring responsibilities with school and other commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young carers are supported by Wrexham, Conwy & Denbighshire (WCD) Young Carers<\/a> who recently benefitted from the Conwy Valley and North Wales Coast Community Rail Partnership\u2019s Resilience Grant<\/a>. WCD Young Carers received \u00a3500 towards the cost of an overnight residential aimed at building on their self-confidence; peer support, life skills as well as providing them with a break from their caring role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2024 10 young people attended an overnight adventure at Cornel Scout Centre<\/a> with a packed programme of activities and downtime organised. Activities included using nature to print designs, cooking, interactive games, time for reflection and fun around the campfire.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The WCD Young Carers received community voluntary support during the residential from two local leaders, which has led 3 of the young carers now involved in other community projects and events. Additionally, the group have been offered further support from local leaders who enjoyed engaging and meeting the young carers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
